30 Days of Photographs II - Day 15

Wood

Trees are still made out of wood, right?

Before y'all start asking me what kind of tree that is, it doesn't matter.  The islands of the Bahamas are comprised of limestone, a form of calcium carbonate.  Basically, they're rocks.  Because of this, the depth of topsoil is relatively shallow, forcing the growth of trees to spread outward as shown.

Some of the more mature trees will develop very intricate trunk bases with very lengthy root formations.  The one I was hoping to photograph for today's theme is presently covered in yard cuttings (I wasn't going to risk getting a centipede sting clearing it away) but I'll try to post a photo of it in the future.  It's a fig tree, one of the oldest and tallest trees in our yard and one of its roots extends to a length of approximately ... wait for it ... 42 feet.

Heh, heh.

(And just to satisfy those of you with inquiring minds, the tree in the photo is a Poinciana.  One of its empty seed pods can be seen at the bottom left and the tiny weed-like things seen between the roots at the upper left, centre and lower right of the picture are saplings of the same tree.)

30 Days of Photographs II - Day 14

Forty-two

I'm pretty sure there were no lions in Camelot.

"Hitting the wall" is a term used to describe the point at which a long distance runner or cyclist experiences extreme fatigue and, in some cases, hallucinations due the loss of glycogen in the body.

This term might be appropriately applied to this 30-day 'Marathon of Madness' to describe the point at which a participant may experience extreme exhaustion and, in most cases, hysteria due to the lack of photographic ideas for the daily themes.

I hit that wall yesterday.  With very few hours of sleep and having so many things to do, my thoughts were in a deep fog leaving me completely desolate of ideas for today's entry.  But just as I was about to succumb to the pressures of this challenge, a vision appeared in my mind.  Like peering through the mists of Avalon, there it was:  My Camelot!

Many of the houses and residential complexes here on our island are surrounded by walls, some being more ornate than others and some, like the one in the photo, slightly on the extreme side of exterior decoration.  This is a private complex, is surrounded by four walls that are similarly adorned and is named "Camelot".  Really!

As for the number of lions appearing on the pillars and in reliefs along the walls, I have no idea.  I lost count at forty-two.

30 Days of Photographs II - Day 13

Pleasure

Only In Canada, eh?  Pity.

If you've ever spent an extended period of time away from home, you probably have experienced a bit of homesickness.  Moving to another country, on the other hand, can greatly enhance one's yearning to return to that place of familiar people, sights, sounds and smells so much so that some will return, even if it's for a mere visit.

I miss many things about Canada (and, yes, one of those things would include snow) but try as I might, I cannot shake my yearnings for certain foods that are only available in, or from, my native country.  I probably won't get to enjoy my favourite pizza, Chinese food or chicken wings for quite some time (delivery or take-out is clearly not an option and a visit home would require me getting on the plane which is definitely "not on my dance card"), so I bribe rely upon the graciousness of my visiting Canadian friends to smuggle bring down certain items that will satisfy my cravings, even if it is only for a short period of time.

But the pleasure is exquisite.

30 Days of Photographs II - Day 12

Fear

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.
There are many things that I fear.  The fear of flying, for example, is at the top of my list and will avoid it like the plague whenever I can.

Another thing in the top ten of my list is the fear of publicly humiliating myself.   As an example of how I might accomplish this feat, I give you what I call, "Scary Glass".  These items, collectively or singularly, are like my kryptonite.  I have this unconscious tendency to "talk with my hands" and if a Scary Glass is within arms length of my body, it will - quite unintentionally - get tipped over, resulting in excessive spillage, inevitable shattering and attracting unwanted attention to myself.

Accordingly, I try to have all beverage vessels in my immediate vicinity restricted to the height of the glass shown in the background (you'll notice its thick, heavy stable base).

Oh, and in case you're thinking of inviting me over for a party sometime, Ming vases, lamps, your grandmother's fine china, among other items, can also be categorized as "Scary Glass".

30 Days of Photographs II - Day 9

Something I Hate

Don't you hate it when this happens?  You are able to get about three decent sized pieces of foil when you finally notice the top of the roll has been crushed and which you know will result in all further pieces to become smaller and smaller, eventually shrinking into useless triangles of shiny wrap.  But as naive determined as you probably are, you believe you might get one more - just one more - piece that will sufficiently cover that unused half of the onion you needed for dinner.  Yet it backfires on you and you end up with a piece so small that it's not even worthy of rabbit ears.

So, do you end up tossing the roll away?  Oh, no!  You hate to be wasteful and you think to yourself that the foil may come in handy one day, say for some future art project you probably won't start let alone finish, or maybe use some of it to bridge the electrical contacts in that kitchen appliance that isn't working properly.  It might even be useful for Christmas Tree decorations in place of the icicles you will probably forget to buy.

Who knows?

I think I'll go now and finish that tinfoil hat I was working on.
