The Bloggerhood of the Traveling Book (Chapter 5)

Firstly, let me apologize in advance for this creatively mediocre post - not that my posts are all that creative, or not mediocre for that matter - but I am suffering from a head cold gifted to me from a friend from Canada. I only picked him up at the airport for christssake! A mere ten minute drive from the airport to his place and - WHAM! - I was down and out for the count late Sunday afternoon. I will forgive him, though, since he brought me a couple of Cadbury's Caramilk bars, which I will not eat until my taste buds return to normal. It's torture, I tell you!  Torture!

So, I am feeling out of sorts: my brain feels like it is having an out of body experience.

But I am digressing, sneezing, coughing and moaning.

It all started this past summer - I'm guessing in June or July - when Unfinished Person (a.k.a. and/or formerly known as Unfinished Rambler - and who I think may be suffering from an unfinished identity crisis ;-) sent a book to Quirkyloon (who is still Quirkyloon and quirky - in a nice way, of course ;-). After reading it, Quirkyloon offered the novel to the first person brave enough to e-mail her his or her actual mailing address! "Daredevil" Boom Boom  (formerly known - but may still be known as -  CatLadyLarew, who has oneofthelongestURLblogaddressesI'veeverseen, and also appears to be suffering an identity crisis  ;-)  received the book from Quirkyloon.

Boom Boom thought that the passing of the book to others was such a novel idea that she decided to keep this readership going and coined it, "The Bloggerhood of the Traveling Book".  From Boom Boom, the book made its way to nonamedufus (who I've recently nicknamed, "Sir Punsalot" merely because he does and is a master at it ;-) and lives in Canada, more specifically, from *farts* Quebec.  After answering a simple question - okay, I admit I was wrong on my first guess - the book made it to me.

The title in question is, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" by Stieg Larsson, and is the second of a trilogy.

I now have the privilege of being part of this Bloggerhood book club and the honour of passing this novel to anyone else who is interested in joining. As I said, this is the second book of a trilogy, but I think its story stands on its own so it isn't absolutely necessary to read the first.   It's an exceptional read.

So, without further ado, I'll send it to the first person who can decipher this acronym:
BOS
  • Hint #1: It's what I feel like with this head cold.
  • Hint #2: It's what a mischievous kid (and possible future arsonist) would leave on the porch of a nasty neighbour.
If you don't want to join, comments are still welcome!  But, just think ...

(My web cam shot of the inside cover.  What?? I'm lazy and ill - sue me.)

  1. Oh no. I'm sorry you feel like a bag of shit.

The traveling book theme is hilarious.

  2. Bag of shit. Oh, I see Reffie beat me to it. Uh, Bitch On Steroids, Bloated On Snot? I'd actually like to read this book, too.

  3. Reffie: Congrats! You are the next receipient of this fabulous book!

Yeah, I guess I made the clues too easy, but it has some ways to travel from here so I thought I should get it in the mail a.s.a.p. Send me your mailing address to me at:

    a.00dozo@yahoo.com

    ;-)

  4. Crap, Reffie beat me to it. I've already read the book in Swedish, but I sort of wanted to read it in English too, to see if it's any good in translation.

  5. BonyMike: Yeah, Reffie was the first, but the others aren't bad guesses - even though they don't follow the clue - except I don't do steroids.
    ;-)

Maybe you can get the book from Reffie when she's done.

  6. Ziva: Good Morning (or is it evening there??)! Did you read all three of the books? It's a very easy read - except for keeping all of the Swedish names straight, oy! - so my guess is that the translation to English was done very well.

  7. It's 4 pm over here, so I guess good afternoon would be most correct? :P Yes, I read all three books and loved them. It's interesting because most of the time when I read a translated book, it's translated from English to Swedish, not the other way around, and there can be huge differences in the quality of translations.

  8. Damn. Can't be first! Bag O' Shit. Didn't really want to read the book anyway. Can you say, "sour grapes?"

    Hope you're feeling better, 00.

  9. Ziva: I think these are the only translated books I've read. I have read other translated text - mostly manuals and instructions - which are startingly poorly written and, at times, extremely confusing.

Hopefully we can take this book worldwide and get it to you soon!

  10. Cheryl: Thanks for playing! Yes, when I don't feel good and somebody asks me how I'm doing, I tell them I'm having a BOS day.

I am feeling better today, though. Thank you.

  11. Well, I've already received and read, but I thought BOS was Blog on Steroids.

Hmm. I need a brain transplant or something. hee hee

And for the record Quirkyloon is a she, although she admits to having a few chin whiskers which she plucks on a regular basis.

    hee hee

  12. Quirks: "Blog on Steroids" - Ha! Well, I was a little buzzed on cold meds when I wrote the post.

I know it was a bit of a run-on sentence, but I didn't refer to you as a "he" - I now see that it was awkward wording, though. Sorry!

And your brain is fine just the way it is!

  13. I was sure it was "Book Of Stieg. Because the title is the Girl Who Played With Fire (and left a lit a bag of shit on that guy's doorstep). No? Oh well, glad you enjoyed it and congrats to Reffie on being the next member of our little club.

How apt. My word-veri was 'punkiest'.

  14. dufus: Heh, heh. "Book of Stieg" - nice catch (that didn't even cross my mind) but appropos! But the flaming bag of poo clue was in reference - in part - to the title. Since I made up the acronym, I had to give a hint. (My guess is that, if it were Salander, it would've been a land mine in the bag instead of poo!)
    ;-)

'punkiest' Ha! (Dang, I rarely get good word-veries.)

  15. I knew what it was and I could have won if I'd just seen this earlier. I looked yesterday and you had not posted yet. Dang it! I never win anything. Well, that's not entirely true. I won something from Gun Diva that I didn't even know I was in the contest for.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Linda: I'm almost afraid to ask what "Gun Diva" is - and can't imagine what the prize was - so I won't. (It sounds scary!)
    ;-)

Well, I need to get this book off of this rock since it may take awhile to reach it's next destination, hence the easy clues. But don't despair, dear Linda, there will be other chances. In the meantime, I really think you would enjoy the first book, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". Check out your local library or book store - it is worth the read, but it is not necessary to read it before the second.

  17. If you think English to Swedish and Swedish to English is bad, Ziva and Double-O, you ought to read some of the English to English documents that I have to "translate" every day at work. They might as well be written in Romanian.

    ReplyDelete
  18. BonyMike: I haven't yet heard from Reffie, but if she doesn't want it, I'll send it to you.

Re: Translations - Ha! I feel for you - I have a helluva time trying to read some of the newspaper articles here, and it is English. And some of the quotes can be hysterical.

  19. A traveling book, what a wonderful idea. I could have won it if I wanted to but I would have to read the first book of the trilogy and then of course read the traveling on which would lead me to the third and i just don't have that kind of time. I really can't commit to 3 books right now. I have my blogs, facebook and the holidays coming up. Not to mention work and laundry. My God it wouldn't be like winning anything would it? It would be a chore. I'm so glad I'm not Reffie/Carol.

  20. Sue: I imagine the book will make its rounds for awhile, so you may have a chance in the future. You may want to keep an eye out for the first one anyway. The series is a good read.

  21. Son of a Bitch!

Oh wait, that was my dyslexia kicking in. Damn.

  22. CheesyMike: Ce qui la baise?

(Je sais, mon français aspire ;-)

  23. Identity crisis? Me? I just keep forgetting who I am by the time I finish typing in my URL every time.
I'm working on the third one now. A word of advice... take notes before you send the book off to Reffie. I'm having a hard time remembering the book well enough to answer Bryan's questions! (Brain like a sieve... another reason I have an identity crisis.)
Side note to Reffie... send it on to Mike when you're done so he'll quit his bitchin'! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Boom Boom: Ha, ha! You caught that, did you?? (I mean about the part of having the longest URL [I fell off of my chair when I read that] .... not that you are suffering from and identity crisis, of course, but I do like "Boom Boom".)
    ;-)
And I chuckled at your aside, "Watch for the Next Installment of ... Or, You Can't Blog All The Time" note - this reminded me of the Aesops Fables in the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" series. (Okay, I'm weird).

At any rate, since my mom wanted to read the entire trilogy as well (and it would have delayed sending this one on to Reffie), we got all three books - if you need to pick my brain for any details, I'll certainly oblige. You've got my e-mail.

As for BonyMike - I have no idea what's going on there, but I'll try to give Reffie a gentle push in his direction.

  25. Double O, I was saying that SOB was dyslexic for BOS, get it? I was also acting like no one guessed it right before me.

mon cerveau est aujourd'hui un peu foutu:)

  26. CheesyMike: Ha! Ingenious! I'm glad that you think outside of the (Cheez-It) box! That said, apparently I'm very blonde (it runs in the family).
    ;-)
