An Ode to a Poinciana

Oh, Poinciana, Poinciana
Whose bows reach so far,
When are you going to leaf
And shade my little car?

You're a beautiful parasol
When in full bloom,
I await your tiny leaves
To save my car from doom.

Oh, Poinciana, Poinciana
When all of your leaves are spent,
No longer shading my car,
I'll have to buy a tent.

Edit:  Yep...I was bored. That is one of the Poinciana's in our front yard. The photo isn't great, but these trees are bloomin' all over the place.  This is what the blooms look like closer up:
The tree that shades my car isn't quite at this stage.

  1. I want one of those trees. Do they grow in Northeast Ohio? I guess I'll have to visit wiki.

  2. Cool! It must be poetry week, cause I penned some of my own.

Now I have to work on pronouncing Poinciana. 'poyne-see-anna'? 'po-in-chi-ana'? Which is it?

  3. Very pretty...and excuse me Mike, it is pronounced "fl-ow-ers".

I have maples that shade my driveway. Which is great except that all the birds living in said maples crap all over my car. And then the maples shed their seed "helicopters" all over it. It ends up looking like Mother Nature's version of tar and feathering.

  4. Hi Sue: I don't know if they would survive winters, but you never know. These are Royal Poincianas, I'm not sure if there are different varieties.

Mike: Heh heh. I was also thinking about doing a poem last week and saw a few others, including yours - funny! And it is the first pronunciation (there is no "ch" sound).

Nicky: Where you be girl? Probably cleaning your car? I've got the same problem, only it's when the tree is bare. Ha Ha, "helicopters" - as kids we would collect handfulls of them and toss them in the air. The things we used to do to amuse ourselves. Oy.

  5. Kind of a sizzling verse you got going there, Kiddo. Pretty flowers though!

  6. Linda: I could probably cook a turkey in my car these days! Yep, the blooms are everywhere, alas they won't last long.

  7. Those are beautiful, and I love your poem. I don't suppose they'd grow here in the Midwest.

  8. Jen: Thanks! I really don't know much about the tree. And as I said to another, they may not survive harsh winters, but maybe survive as a potted plant(?).

  9. I don't think we have them here. Flowering trees are a bit of a rarety in Sydney other than Jacarandas and the odd Flame tree. Funny how people in hot countries scope out shady parking spots. Weird world.

  10. Baino: Hi! At this time of year it's a scorcher. Humidex is 95f (about 38c) today and it would be great to have our trees in full foiliage. Yes, the Jacaranda is almost exactly like the Poinciana except the blooms are somewhat different, mostly in colour. They are probably from the same family.

  11. What a beauty! Too bad it can't be useful, too!

  12. Hey Reffie! Thanks for dropping in. The blooms will fall, but the tree becomes a huge umbrella and great for shade - and I know you know about summer heat!
