Awww...How Purdy!

This is one of the latest infrared satellite images of the Atlantic.  I don't know if VanGogh would have been flattered or maybe just mad enough at Mother Nature to cut off his other ear in protest of being copied.

(Satellite Image borrowed from NOAA)

So far, none of the forecast tracks for the current storms have them coming toward our island (*crossing fingers, toes, legs and eyes - oops, maybe not the eyes, it makes it hard to type*), but we will get some of the effects like wind gusts that will cool down the temperature (YAY!!) and some rain bands that will make more work of our pool (bummer).  I guess you can't have the good without the bad.

Either way, I expect to be sporadically appearing online due to the weather and/or my stomach.  No worries, though, we will survive.

And, to any others out there that may be affected by the storms, be prepared and stay safe!

Edit:  In case anyone is interested in tracking storms, there are many sites.  I recently found this site  which shows the computer models of storm tracks.  There is a zoom feature on the left and a toggle menu on the far right.  It's quite interesting.

  1. Oh good luck to you. I hope your pool survives with no damage.

Van Gogh has nothing on that picture.

  2. Good spotting on that photo! It really is like Starry Night.

And good luck during hurricane season.

  3. I loved how you picked up on the Van Gogh reference. Hope it just sweeps on by instead of through. Hoping it keeps heading east so we don't get hit too hard. If it tracks west, it's gonna get ugly. Not NC ugly, but ugly nonetheless.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  4. Cheeseboy: Thanks - it's not going to get very close and it doesn't look like we will be getting the rain we expected (we've been trying to empty the pool).

  5. Frank: Thanks - there was a more spectacular image when Danielle was still active, but I couldn't find it in the archive.

Behind Earl is Fiona and yet another depression following Fiona. Oy!

P.S. If you follow the link that I added as an edit to my post, pan up to Hudson's Bay. I don't think they name those storms or systems.

  6. If that storm hits you'll want to hop in your van and go. Okay. bad pun. My daughter was planning to hit the Outer Banks next week. Earl may hit there before she does. By the way we're going through a bit of a heat wave up hear. With the humidity it feels like 40C/104F! Thank God we've got water in OUR pool.

  7. Cheryl: Van Gogh was the first thing I thought of when I saw those images. They look beautiful but are dangerous, but then, so it Mother Nature at times. Earl probably won't reach here - we are getting the wind effects now and it's supposed to be headed north. I hope you're not on it's path, but be prepared just the same as it looks like it might graze the upper eastern seaboard (see the link I left in my post edit at the bottom).

My stomach is settling down and I'm feeling a little better, thanks!

  8. dufus: I was counting on you! *groaaan* Even if we jumped in the van, we've got nowhere to go! Fiona may not be far behind Earl, so your daughter may want to put off her plans for awhile.

I heard about the heat wave! Yikes! Stay cool in your pool.

  9. Great photo, Double-O. I hope the storms stay clear of you, except a few cool breezes and some drops of rain. Keep cool and I'm glad your tummy is better.

  10. You sound awfully upbeat for somebody who's about to get wiped out by a hurricane. You do know you're on an island in the middle of the ocean, right? Islands are like endangered species these days.

  11. BonyMike: Maybe it's nervous relief? We were fairly certain Earl would not hit us directly. We still have three more months in the season, so I still have plenty of time to freak out.

  12. Hurricane season is one of the reasons I like Finland so much. We don't have hurricane season. We get a few minor tornadoes every year, and a few bad thunderstorms, but very rarely do we get winds that are really bad. And if we did, I would probably be scared shitless. I'm brave like that.

  13. Linda: Thanks - tummy is better and we've lost the cooler winds now. (I posted a reply yesterday but it got lost?? Shit happens).

  14. Ziva: I'd rather face a hurricane than a tornado. Apparently you don't get the Doomsday Channel (a.k.a. the Weather Channel).

Apparently they don't call them hurricanes if they go past or develop over a certain latitude. If you go to the link in my post, toggle clouds "on" (to the right of your screen) pan up to northern Canada (Hudson's Bay area), you'll see Earl's mommy! You might be getting similar storms in Findland at times.

  15. Stay safe, and at least if it's going to bring more work, it'll be more comfortable to work in.

  16. Alice: Hi! No worries - Earl is visiting my Canadian bretheren in eastern Canada - a mere tropical storm now and nothing they haven't experienced in the past. Alas, the cooler breezes have left, but it is fall and artic fronts are soon expected (yes, even here some years!).

P.S. Loved your Jack & Jill today. I'm thinking I might do a PhotoHunt now and again.

  17. Goodbye, Eearrrrrl! Go Dixie Chicks!

Oh, that's not the Earl you're talking about?

Well, OK. I hope everything is not so wet and blown away there.

  18. Reffie: Ha, ha! A great song!

Nope, Earl was a pearl, for us at least. He's long gone and now forgotten.

There be a storm brewin' just south of y'all ... hope it doesn't cause you any grief, though (unless you can use some rain). Either way, be safe if it does come your way.

  19. Yes, yes what pretty colors. I would be so bummed if we had a hurricane in Ohio and I lost power, no internet. What would I do? Talk to my family?

  20. Sue: Hey! Thanks for dropping in. Hey, be thankful you're not in Texas right now!

  21. I'm happy your're safe. I know you must dread hurricane season. I know I would. I'm such a wuss. Love the VanGogh reference. It does resemble his 'Starry Night'.

  22. Leeuna: Yes, we're safe so far, and thank you. I'd hate to jinx myself but this season has been more of a joke than anything else. It seems that the National Hurricane Centre has been naming every fart that floats off of the west coast of Africa. Oy.

Ah, and Van Gogh! Who wouldn't notice the resemblance! (I still think he'd be jealous that technology could so easily simplify his famous technique.)
